Kingdom alliance?

From what I understand, when the game starts the kings/queens will be able to select their lands and I was wondering if we Norheim will be located near, if not allied with a kingdom?

The independence of the Norheim Kinship is great to start with, and I am glad to see that our eventual goal is to grow to be a powerful city/state, which will then be able to negotiate and ally with other lands.

I thought I had read we  Norheim will be allied with a Kingdom?

The Kingdom of Dol'Aderyn seems particularly nice.  They are basing themselves off the Lord of the Rings and prefer a more temperate climate, and I can envision we Norheim living north of them in a tougher clime, and yet building a good relationship with such a lawful kingdom...or should I say "Queendom".

This might even lead to a great trade alliance where the Norheim live where timber and stone are greatly available and we trade with Dol'Aderyn for their temperate resources.

Thoughts?

Ok aside from my twitchspasm...

I thought the general idea was to find a great place, not to find an acceptable place within a given kingdom? So that would kind of rule out having a pre-determined kingdom to stick ourselves in, no?

True I don't want us to be IN their kingdom, as we would then be subject to their laws, religions and taxes, but as kings/queens I am assuming they will get first pick of the lands.

So we find a place just outside their Kingdom and snatch it up.

We get the benefit of independence, and yet know we have a lawful kingdom to our south.

They get the benefit of having a hard working city/state to their north and we grow together.

And honestly, with the number of guilds I see trying to be assassins and griefers, it might be nice to be allied and close to a lawful kingdom.

That being said, if the leaders of the Kin find a wonderful spot with resources aplenty, I am completely for solitude and independence!

There was another thread somewhere that we talked about alliances.

One concern is, we have no way of knowing which kingdoms the king will decide on.. if we make an alliance with a king who ends up picking a kingdom on the southern end of the continent, we'd either have to break the alliance or decide not to live in the north.

I think our best bet is learning as much as we can about all the other groups and ranking them from being good neighbors to horrible ones. When it comes time for us to start picking our location, we can look at where everyone else has settled and take both the geography and our neighbors into consideration.

If the starting continent is roughly square, has two kingdoms to the north and two to the south then we'd probably look at the two to the north. One might have a king we like, but a bunch of dukes and other nobility that we want absolutely nothing to do with while the other has people we were mostly neutral toward.

We might find a king/queen we like that wants a kingdom in the north, but ends up with less IP so he/she doesn't get first pick and has to settle for the south.. or they get their kingdom of choice to the north but the dukes and other nobility they were hoping to have under them didn't have enough IP so another group we hate takes over the positions right below the king. We have no way of knowing how things will fall.

If I get time this weekend I'll poke around on the official forums to check, but I believe all land, while not necessarily owned, IS part of a Kingdom. If this is true we'll most definitely want to find a kingdom that will be happy to leave us alone.

All land will indeed be part of a kingdom. We talked about that somewhere i think. But, at least my opinion, is that we shouldn't let that be the deciding factor on where we set up shop. A factor, yes, but any kingdom that doesnt support its citizens will be overthrown in time. So i think location weighs heavier than current nobility.

...Yes that is what I thought too.  Even if it  is not a player, there will still be an NPC king/queen who "owns" the land.

And that's another point.  Do we want to be part of a player or an NPC king's land?

I guess we will find out more when we hit Alpha.

I only pointed that out due to the fact that I assumed the climate we settle in is non-negotiable. That is at the very heart of what Norhiem is to be. So if that is the case it would seem to make sense that choosing our particular nobles would be the number one factor in deciding where along our given limitations we settle.

Just my 2 cents. Plus we have another 18 months to go at minimum. We'll see where this all ends up.

I thought the very heart of what Norhiem is to be is the people that comprise it, not how warm or cold the climate is.

As far as climate is concerned, I think we all want somewhere that is "green in the summer and snows (or is at least a bit chilly ) in the winter". Past that, I don't think it matters what the latitude is.

That said... it just occurred to me... what if, in Elyria, "the north" is all desert? Then everyone saying they are from the north will be saying they are from the desert.

True...just because north on the Earth is cold, doesn't mean it will be the same in Elyria.

I live in the northern midwest of the USA (Wisconsin) and we get cold winters, and pretty mild summers...pretty much like Germany (where my ancestors come from). So while being Norheim and favoring the cold and the "north", we should not end up on some resourceless Tiaga where nary a tree grows.

Lumber, Stone, Elk, Fishing...resources are needed for a great City State...North and South does not matter.

We basically want exactly that. Minnesota/Wisconsin weather patterns. Of course, that's mostly only useful to those of us who know Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Known for trying winters, but also has mild weather at other times and a lot of wildlife. Hopefully the world-gen uses an earth-like biome distribution, but for all we know the entire north will be a desert. Just because Vikings and the like were known as north-men, we're free since we're not really Vikings. We're just Viking flavored.

We're certainly free to settle wherever, in the end. Though it seems a bit pointless to be referring to ourselves as akin to Vikings if we end up settling anywhere other than a boreal forest/scandinavian region.

So does that Rules out the Eastern Britain, Rus, Franks, iceland/greenland, Canada regions?

Why would it? This is all open to discussion. It would seem logical however to apply the same living conditions from which their culture originates to ourselves if that is the aesthetic we're going for.

Assuming it's about the aesthetic rather than the personality traits. Could be both, but I thinkthe Viking culture is more what we go for than the biome. I still think the biome is a good idea, though, as part of what made the vikings what they were was the surroundings.
