Fellow Kinspeople! I've been thinking about the start of the game. We are supposed to build a town of our own from scratch but that doesn't match the idea of an existing community at game start. What I've been imagining is something that we can add to our common history that would explain why we are now going to build Norhien.

Maybe we are survivors of a horrible masacre and now are rebanding to start over with some other people joining this norse group from different backgrounds, but with the same wish of freeing themselves from the hands of tirants.

Maybe we come from another continent in search of something,  bringing our own gods and ways to this land of chained people.

Maybe we had planned this for a long time in order to rebuild a city of legend and fulfill our part in some kind of prophecy made by a mythic seer.

Whatever the case, I think there must be a turning point. A reason. A something that is making us, or a big part of us,  join together in this endeavor. I am finding it hard to ubderstand my character motivations without this turning point. Do kin-tet agree this is an important aspect to be discusses for RP sake?

And may our hearts break before our oaths do

I agree that there should be a reason for doing so, but I don't think we necessarily all need the same reason. For example some of us may have survived a raid on our village and want to move on for fear of it happening again, while another may have upset their local Count and feels the need to hide and start over. One member may have been shunned by their family and doesn't want to live in their shadow forever. I think it'll be more interesting if we all have our own reasons and motives. The following was written by Dorn when we were discussing originally and I think it's a good place to start discussions.

QuoteTHWAK!! All eyes turned to see a Northman holding a broadsword, lying across his table. The sound the flat of its blade had made hitting the hard wood had cut the tavern talk to silence.
The strong looking lady next to him rolled her eyes and muttered sarcastically “Very subtle”. His face cacked in a wolfish grin.
The lady stood and turned to the crowded of the tavern. “Now that he’s got your attention. We are headin’ out soon to stake a claim and build a place to live and grow. We……”
A bleary eyed man well into his cups nearby guffawed and interrupted “Jus’ you two? Wont las’ a moon out there!”
She glowered. “No not just us to you dolt, why do you think we’re here at the “travellers” tavern?!” Taking another breath she continued. “We are looking for others wanting to settle out of the city in new lands to come. We two have heard of a place of good soil, wood, stone and water. It won’t be easy and we’ll have to guard what’s ours from all sorts, but ours it will be and the lands around. We also heard some tales about that area…tales of old….tales that might make a man and woman rich if true. But we’ll keep them to ourselves for now.”
The drunk slurred evilly “Well mebee we just be wringin’ this…legend…out o’ you and going on our ow. Whadd’ya think’ o ‘at!?”
The Northman rose slowly from where he sat next to the speaker until his head nearly brushed the rafters, eyes fixed on the drunk and hand still on the sword. Still something wolfish about his face, but now terribly far from a grin.
A new voice urgently cut in with a forced laugh “Jed hush now and have a drink on me” a newcomer spun a coin onto the drunks table and “Jed” followed it with his hand trying to grab it till he tipped straight off his chair. The room erupted in laughter and the tension broke.
The lady behind the new voice, with a fellow behind her, approach the speaker with a smile. “Greetings. We’ve been thinking about setting up somewhere new as well. Can we talk?”
The fellow trailing looked up at the Northman with trepidation and leant back warily as the tall man leaned down quickly towards him. But then he winked, grinned and rumbled out “How about you and I drink while the ladies here plan our future?”

I'm all for any story that tells how the Norhiemians came to be. I always thought of it kinda like, the Norhiemians came from a distant successful land and they decided they want to explore the rest of the world. (Hence alluding to the viking part of us and their exploratory tendencies) My character comes in as a boy raised by the clan after his parents were exiled. Naturally my parents, coming from "Chained" lands (as Arbor would call it) weren't immediately welcomed, but following their deaths, I was brought up as a true Norhiemian.

I can work something similar in. I was thinking a monk that shed his "holy" duties because he felt what he served was a sham. Whether that be the god, the religious order built around that god, or both. I was toying with the idea of being a monk because of the ties to bees/mead, but I don't really see him as a devout follower of a god anymore because he is distrusting of gods and those that represent them.

Anyway, this thread helped me brainstorm that, so I posted it here. It's an example of something like Rythja means, I suppose.

So in this tale of Dorn's who are the other people in there? Are you the strong looking lady Alysiah ? Any one else in there?

I think my 'concern' is how was this spread out to so many people? How have the norsemen come to trust so many outsiders when they were no willing to share that secret with the other people so soon?

That is a great point. We do need some sort of unifying pivot. Otherwise how did this even become a thing?

Just Dorn and myself, the other characters are open to be taken. And who says the secret has any truth to it? =)

*edit* Also, the story was just a suggestion, not anything set in stone. It was a possible way of uniting people rather than some disaster that struck us all.

I can re-write the story.

a) A number of northman looking folk take up the corner of a tavern. Some have similar looks as through family groups but not all.

b) with them sit others of all colour and creed talking together in low voices. Although fewer in number they share ale and food with the northmen.

c) Two of them step forwards (enter story a slightly edited but with a change to the last part)

d) (amended last part) several individuals and some small groups wander over to the two and begin to talk. A few others seem to ponder before running out the doors..perhaps to talk wit thier own families....

Just my opinion (hi! I'm new ) : I like the tavern story. It gives a good place for everyone to sort of weave their own story into it.

My own story, that I didn't have room to finish in my application, would have eventually wound it's way into having taken up work as a scout / tracker / hunter with a group of... something... merchants or mercenaries or something... after my worthless father was caught and dragged off to prison or death for his series of broken cons/contracts. The group could be at the same tavern for the night. Having nowhere to call home, I would be very interested in the prospect of starting over far away from the name my father earned for our family.

I like the tavern story as an opening. However, I don't think it is a deep enough story to forge the bonds the Kinship needs.

I'm a lit graduate and so this reminded me of the fact that "The Quest" is a well-known motif for storytelling and formation of groups (Odyssey etc.).

I also recently saw a game reviewed on the ABC TV show 'GoodGame' called The Banner Saga 2, a Nord-cultural strategy game - video here: https://www.youtube.com/w ... atch?v=OWmpqp7Vw1g

So then, based on those two things, this is my idea/suggestion for a 'Beginning of the Kin' story arc:

1. Dorn and several other 'central' Kin meet in the tavern to discuss their plans of setting out into the wilds. Their motivation for doing so can come from their individual backstories. So what Dorn suggested for a possible re-write 2 posts ago can apply.

2. The 'core group' set out on the long, arduous journey to search for their new homeland. They do not have a specific destination, they only know they will head north, and stop once their find a place they can call home.

3. During their travels, they generally avoid speaking of their goals with strangers, but through circumstances and events on the road, certain individuals may gain their trust and be told the reason for this journey. Some of these individuals may have even proved themselves worthy to be named Kin and invited to join the trek. They have reasons of their own to do so - some may tell, some may not yet be ready to.

4. Although the Kin themselves are tight-lipped about their intentions, small rumours start to spread like wisps of smoke through the landscape they traverse. Other travellers, homeless wanderers and outcasts hear the rumours and may seek out the travellers and petition to join them. It is up to the Kin whether their petitions are accepted - perhaps a task will be set so that they can be tested.

5. As the band of travellers grows, so does the multitude of reasons why they have set out on this journey. But really, it does not matter all that much. The shared adversity and hardship of their travels forges them into one Kin, sharing everything and caring for one another as they endure the endless struggle for survival. The Kin have only one goal - to find their home.

6. As they travel, their small convoy is beset by beasts, bandits and monsters. They are lured astray by will-of-the-wisps and enchanted by swap witches that seek to lure them to their death. They must fight strange diseases and survive starvation.

7. Perhaps there is even a small group of Kin who lose hope in the face of the daily struggle for survival. Perhaps they start to question the reasons why they walk on and on, without ever seeming to arrive anyhere. Unrest forms among some, and those who still have faith must fight to convinve the others that what they are seeking is worth the hardship they must endure. Secret alliances form and bonds of Kinship are tested. Perhaps a traitor is unmasked and punished. Each Kin must confront their own heart and look deep within to see if they are truly ready to devote their life to the Kinship.

8. Then, after many, many a month of wandering, the Kin are given a sign from their gods. They have arrived. This is the land they must claim as their own and build their long-desired haven. The bonds forged during the journey are thick and strong - the tests survived by the Kinship have created a solid foundation on which they can build Norhiem.

This may not work at all and just popped into my head after reading Amiira's post, but...

Maybe start an ongoing story thread now, starting from the tavern. Since it's still early, for the moment progress it a bit forward once per week or 2 weeks. As members join and work out their story, let them write themselves into the story. Or if they don't write themselves in, eventually add them in however you want.

For instance, start with the tavern now. Everyone who can see themselves in the tavern for one reason or another currently could write their part to that point. From there on out, the group moves on from the tavern with everyone currently involved. New members or anyone who hasn't currently joined the group can write themselves into the story on the next part. And so on, and so on.

To keep the "joining" thread clean, you could create a second thread with what is happening between posts on the joining thread. Various adventures, things that are happening, etc.

As I said, this just popped in my head and I haven't thought it through, so if it's a horrible idea, nevermind.

The Tavern's story is Dorn's background. Nothing prevents people of being on that tavern and joining him, but also not prevents other stories to start and evolve and eventually merge somewhere in the middle. We know we have an end point though: we all arrive at our new lands after a long journey and ready to start over. Did we occupy those lands and now they belong to us legally? Did we buy it from the Count? Maybe some part of it already belonged to some of us and now we're gonna expand around it?

Yeah, it's (the tavern) fine for a smaller story, but like "All 50 of us managed to run into each other in a tavern talking about our secret new town" was bothering me. A small group that works for sure, but I don't think it makes sense for all of us without seeming like a cop-out.

I made it as a comment on Gabe's post, but I figured I'd also make it a new post so people can get the idea of my thoughts on that.

I kinda like the idea of our whole culture being dispersed long long ago by something (whether it be an actual event or just a legend), This could very well facilitate the whole 'different walks of life coming together' idea and could fir into our backstories really well. Maybe initially some people meet in this tavern and then other descendants of Norheim catch wind of it later down the road. I do admit the notion of having like all 50 of us in a bar one day is kinda silly lmao.

Just a caveat: I'm sure Dorn never planned for everyone to be in that tavern lol. It's his story and it can be totally unrelated to anyone else's. For all we know, he could have heard the rumors from anyone of us

I plan on being one of the first out there, so if I'm a hunter already in place that gets absorbed by Norhiem, I'm cool with that.

Well to be honest Alisyah and I DID write that with the view to everyone (eg our characters) being in the tavern...or to be told be people in the tavern. Then take a week preparing, then set off together from Newhaven in convoy.

But that was before we had all sorts of information about land and KS tiers and starting.

The concept of Norhiem is built into my character Torvalds backstory as can be seen here. http://norhiem.clanwebsit ... cendants-of-fror-zmy

The idea being that Torvald and any others who name themselves as the descendants of Fror have come together to find ormaybe rebuild the shattered Sromhiem (from the link above). They only know from stories about approximately where it may be and after a generation of searching have instead decided to found a new city in it's image...and in the general region with the hope of exploring the wilds to find sign of the ruins.

They could not do it alone however so spent time in the cities to seek others of a mind to begin something new. The rumours circulated of this group heading out alone, and in the end people gathered in a tavern.....

Again, the drivers for your char being in Norhiem may be your own (as stated right at the top of the recruitment post),
- you may be one of the norse descendants of Fror/stromhiem
- you may be another northman who wants to hang out with like people,
- may be a southerner wanting a new start and think this 'Fror' mythology mumbo jumbo is ridiculous but think having these towering northmen on your side is a safe way to head off into the wilds/start a new life
- you may have been living in a hamlet/cave/forest camp in the area and decided to join
- you may be a craftsman who is being repressed by the guild/mentor and see this as an opportunity to
- you may even be a baron or count with some blood ties to the old-norse (or just a romantic!) who saw this band passing through your lands and went to meet with them and decided that THIS was the stuff of life and threw your lot in with them (setting up a castallean to manage the boring affairs of your lands)

whatevs!

But 'the tavern story' (which now needs to be adapted) and the background to how Torvald got there and why it is called "Norhiem"...that's where it started in our minds originally.

Now while Newhaven is no longer the starting point (it seems?) and you begin where you choose, the "tavern" may end up in a town near the wilds we want to explore for the perfect site. A town that we are all able to select in the UI on exposition day 1 as the place our avatar is crated. I still think it is a good way for us to find a meaning on day 1 of the exposition.

so from all that I'm guessing a forum RP thread for how we all found each other is out?
